  16. <p>Brazil's President is pressed hard to quit before he is impeached
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     The parallels between August 1992 in Brasilia and August 1974
  19. in Washington were eerily exact. Like Richard Nixon 18 years
  20. earlier, President Fernando Collor de Mello vowed to fight to
  21. the end against impeachment and removal from office. But Collor
  22. too saw many of his strongest supporters--including even the
  23. politician who served as best man at his 1984 wedding--turn
  24. against him. Many advised him to resign before he is thrown out
  25. and thus spare the nation a prolonged governmental paralysis.
  26. Collor's hopes of hanging on nearly disappeared last week when a
  27. congressional commission concluded after a three-month
  28. investigation that he and members of his family had received
  29. $6.5 million from his former campaign fund raiser, who extorted
  30. large sums from businessmen hoping for government contracts or
  31. favors. Lawmakers will vote on whether to accuse Collor formally
  32. and start a trial in the Senate sometime this month--if the
  33. President can survive in office even that long.
